Tough, lavishly equipped, and politically indoctrinated, SS troops formed over 38 divisions and numerous other regimental and battalion-sized units, totaling nearly a million men under arms. Their armored units earned plaudits for their actions, and despite sometimes strained relationships with regular army units, most SS formations fought ferociously against great odds until the war's end in Berlin, 1945.
The Waffen-SS was a controversial organization—while their zeal and discipline were undeniable, their many documented atrocities perhaps remain their greatest legacy.
